Country Club Meet
We will be having our annual dual with the Country Club on Wednesday, August 13th, at the Corvallis Country Club with W-ups starting at 11:30 a.m.  Depending on how many swimmers attend, we should be done around 1:00 ish.

There are no entries for this meet just show up and we will arranged the heats on the deck.

Olympic Swimming Coverage
The swimming events start on Saturday, Aug. 9th.  This year the swimming schedule is like never before.  The athletes will be swimming prelims in the evening sessions and finals in the morning sessions.  It will be interesting to see how many are actually able to swim faster in the mornings than they did the previous evening.

USA Swimming has been dominant at the modern Olympics.  The only time the men did not win was in 1960 when they split 4 gold medals each with the Aussie's.  The USA women's team won 5 of 7 golds that year.  In 1976 the East German women's team was the controversial winners taking home 11 of 13 golds and 6 of 11 silver medals.  There was talk of doping, but nothing was ever proven.  This year we will need to watch out for the Aussie's, they are going to be a tough team to beat.

Oregon Selected its 79 member team at the conclusion of our Long Course Championship this past weekend and CAT had 12 swimmers selected.  Congratulations to Brandon Shreeve, Erika Twenge, Jessie James, Meredith Wells, Johnny Beamer, Lauren Allen, Hali Barkdoll, Logan Parker, Ian McPherson, Luke Pebley, Sloan Storie, and Ben Dawley.

Tuesday:  In the 1500 Jessie and Sloan both won their respective age groups and Meredith took off another 9 seconds and Luke took off another 24 seconds from 11 & Over champs.  Johnny also bettered his time by 21 seconds.  After the 1500's team Oregon was in first place.  That is a first and it was in large part due to the performances of the CAT swimmers.  The meet concluded with the 400 fr relays and Oregon won 4 of the 8 relays expanding their lead in the team scores.

Wednesday:  What an incredible day for CAT!  All of our kids have been racing incredibly well.  The performance of the day would have to go to Ben in the 200 bk.  In the morning he qualified 7th with a 2:24.1 (best time by 1.5) and in the evening he moved up to 4th place with his first senior sectional time of 2:20.7!  Lauren made it into the 200 br final and finished 6th with a best time of 2:51.7.

Thursday:  We had several CAT swimmers make two finals today.  Hali finished 7th in the 100 fly with a best time and 6th in the 400 IM,  Sloan was 4th in the 100 fly and 1st in the 400 IM winning by over 12 seconds with a 5:10.2, Jessie won the 200 fr in a new team record and meet record with a 2:07.65 and 3rd in the 400 IM with another new team record of 5:09.40.  Johnny took off 5 seconds in his 400 IM and finished 4th with a 5:00.6,  Ben wrapped up the meet for Oregon with a best time of 5:11.8 and 7th place finish in the 400 IM.  I saw some great racing tonight, two days to go make sure you keep the energy up.

Tuesday:  The CAT Junior team had a great day of racing.  Jordan went into the 200 brst in 99th and finished 60th with a best time.  Jacob finished 17th in the 200 back, winning the bonus heat in a new CAT 13-14 and Open record as well as breaking the 13-14 OSI record.

Wednesday:
Jacob swam the 400 IM in 4:41.60 just missing the OSI record, but he did better his CAT record of 4:42.4.

Thursday:
Mailene moved from 60th to 46th in the 400 free with a second best time.  Jacob was just off getting a second swim moving from 56th to 29th in the 100 back with a new CAT and OSI 13-14 record.  Jordan had the swim of her meet going from 65th 21st in the 100 brst with a one second time drop off of her Sectional Swim.  That night she moved up one place finishing 20th.

Friday: On the final day of the meet Jacob dropped 2 tenths off of his best time, in the 200 IM, with a new CAT record.  CAT had an incredible meet with 87% of the swims being best times.

Newsweek Articles
Rick came across these two articles out of Newsweek and wanted me to put them up for everyone to read.

The first one Stronger, Faster, Smarter discusses the effects exercise has on cognitive abilities.

The Other article, Exercise State of the Mind gets into the physiological effects exercise has on the brain and neural development.

Follow the Black Line
In practice it is important to circle swim so nobody gets injured, but in meets it is just as important to swim in the middle of the lane.  I have caught many of you circle swimming at meets and we have talked about it after your race.  We came across this short article by Jan Prins in Swimming World.  Jan is a professor of kinesiology at the University of Hawaii.

It isn't often when we can sound both frivolous and deadly serious at the same time.  This is one of those occasions because, distilled to its purest form, the winner in our sport is the swimmer who stays as close to a straight-line path as possible and covers this path in the shortest possible time.
How this is accomplished is complicated, but in the realm of biomechanics, this is where we usually start - by examining the most fundamental concepts associated with motion: distance and linear displacement.
By definition, a distinction is made between "distance" and "displacement."  While "distance" is a change in position, "displacement" is the difference between where we start and finish.
We can agree that in competitive swimming, "displacement" doesn't have much practical significance because most races start and end at the same wall.  what is of importance is "distance," which for each race is a fixed measurement.
Consider the dimensions of a typical lane in short course meters.  The swimmer moves in a rectangle, 25 meters long and usually 2-1/2 meters wide.  The diagonal distance between the two opposite ends is 25.12 meters.
If the swimmer swims at a pace of 2 meters/second - which is a pace equal to a 50-second 100 meter swim - and moves diagonally instead of at right angles to the walls, it will take an additional 6-hundreths of a second to cover each length.  Multiply this by the number of lengths, and it is easy to see that watching that black line on the bottom of the pool and not racing in circles is critical.  Also, remember: if the athlete swims at a pace that is slower than the example, more time will be added to the final result.

The Difference is YOU
It has been wonderful being able to focus on coaching full time.  I have been reading some articles by Doc Counsilman, Richard Quick, and I happened across this article by Wayne Goldsmith that I would like everyone to read.  Read the article.

The Atkins diet
The Bend Swim Club had this article on their web site.   Some  of you have told me that you have already read it but I feel it is important  enough for everyone to read.  Check it out.
